bayonetman Posted March 29, 2015 Share #4 Posted March 29, 2015 From the information I was given by a long time employee of Beckwith Manufacturing Company, the markings were used during World War 2 production to track the exact dies used to form the metal throat so that problems could be traced back to the individual machine. When it wore enough to be out of specifications, a new one with the next number was used. Although not for absolutely certain, the marks were apparently B for Beckwith, the die number (actually read them as if the - is not there - yours can be read as 23 or 28, can't be sure in the photo) and the N for New England Pressed Steel who manufactured the dies and tooling.
