twining540 Posted March 28, 2015 Share #1 Posted March 28, 2015 Well my mom went to Florida for a few weeks and came home with this nice surprise for me. Post war script engraved PH named to Merritt V Kear. I haven't been able to find any information on him yet, outside of him having lived in New York when he enlisted, and passed in 2010. I'm going to have to hire my mom as a full time picker if she's going to keep finding things like this.

themick Posted March 28, 2015 Share #9 Posted March 28, 2015 Mom's can be pretty cool this way. Back in the 70s my mom now and then scored militaria stuff for me, or set me up with friends of hers who had things from when they served in WWII. I miss you mom!! chcole1 Posted March 28, 2015 Share #10 Posted March 28, 2015 My mom was friends with a couple from church. When the husband passed away, his wife gave mom some of his military items for me. Come to find out, he was a DSC recipient for action while serving in the 3rd ID in the Korean War.

flytiger Posted April 1, 2015 Share #13 Posted April 1, 2015 The script named are the nicest looking. They seem to have been done around 1947 or so by one engraver. Wonderful find!

Baron3-6 Posted April 1, 2015 Share #15 Posted April 1, 2015 Wonder if he was with 5307th aka Merrill's Marauders? There is a .pdf roster of them floating around the internet somewhere.
Dave Posted April 1, 2015 Share #16 Posted April 1, 2015 He died in Edgewater, FL, so coming out of FL would make sense. You should contact the public library down there and see if they have an obit for him...
Dave Posted April 1, 2015 Share #17 Posted April 1, 2015 Here's a link for their library...it's the second one down in the list. You can call them and see if the local paper ran an obit for him in the week or so after he died... http://www.volusialibrary.org/VCPLbranches-nsb.html
twining540 Posted April 1, 2015 Author Share #18 Posted April 1, 2015 Thanks for the comments. The information and links are very much appreciated. I found the roster for the 5307th but no luck. I'm waiting for the Edgewater library to call me back in regards to an obituary. Thanks again, Todd
