Civil War Pistol Cartridge Pouch

Recommended Posts

I picked this up at an antique store the other day. I think it is a pistol cartridge pouch from the Civil War era but am not sure. Need a little help here.post-1721-1216690230.jpgpost-1721-1216690280.jpg

As best as I can tell from the photos, the box appears to me to be a Civil War cartridge box for .36 ammo. I have a couple of them that have the securing tab riveted and sewn. These are marked with a very faint small scrip US in the flap corner and have a maker stamp over the rivet.

The piece has no markings on it other than the mum symbols visible in the second pic. Could it be Japanese? What would the chances of that be? It is constructed exactly like an early Civil War example I have seen. Were any of these sent to Japan as trade items after the Civil War?

I believe the * markings are the places where the leather held during the cutting process. They are not markings.

TJM is correct, it appears to be a CW pistol cartridge pouch designed to hold 36 cal or 44 cal precussion revolver cartridges. The closing strap on the early war ones were only sewn and the later made ones had a rivet added, Ray
