kfields Posted March 20, 2015 Share #1 Posted March 20, 2015 I drove down to Florida this week to help out my aunt who is moving into a smaller assisted living facility. She is 91 years old this year and is ready to move. Her house has become too much of a burden for her since her husband (my uncle) passed away two years ago. We sorted through many of the family items and she gave me more than a few family pieces. One thing she did give me was the knife my Uncle Bob used during WWII. In the overall scheme of things, it has little monetary value. But from a family perspective, I value it highly as it belong to him and is associated with his time in the service:

kfields Posted March 20, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted March 20, 2015 I am fairly certain the knife spent that last 4 of 5 dozen years in the scabbard packed away. I am surprised the knife isn't in worse shape. The knife has obvious repairs to the handle in that the pommel was replace with what appears to be some sort of aluminum knob. Not sure what that was repurposed from.
kfields Posted March 20, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted March 20, 2015 My uncle Bob served as a crew chief for pilot Vernon Richards in the 8th Air Force, 361st Fighter Group, 374th Fighter Squadron. Here is a staged photo of him tinkering with the engine of a P-47 I believe. I think they transitioned to P-51's. The second photo was taken in France or Belgium that appears to show Richards airplane "Tikka" squirreled away in a building. Thanks for looking!
