cplnorton Posted March 16, 2015 Share #1 Posted March 16, 2015 I picked this up this weekend. The guy said his father was 1st Marine Division on Peliliu and Okinawa. And he didn't know where it came from. But looking at the knife it's been theater modified. I sort of thought Raider when I saw this. I also noticed on teh one side it looked like it had acid damage. It sure didn't look like pitting. And I thought they numbered them with Acid. Well I got it home and took some pics. I think I can see some initials and also I think it's numbered 1200. I know only 1000 are supposed to be numbered. But look at these pics and let me know what you guys think.

cplnorton Posted March 16, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted March 16, 2015 The blade looks like it has acid damage. This does not look like pitting.
cplnorton Posted March 16, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted March 16, 2015 In this spot it almost looks like there are initials. I see a CW and another letter I can't make out. Or it might be a CM something. I can't get a good pic of it. But I can make it out when twisting it in the light.
cplnorton Posted March 16, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted March 16, 2015 This is I think the 1200. I can for sure make out the 00 at the end. but I think it has a 1 in front. I know they only are supposed to have made 1000, but any chance this is wrong?
cplnorton Posted March 16, 2015 Author Share #7 Posted March 16, 2015 And another pic of the 1200 marking. What do you guys think?
ViewfinderGyrene Posted March 16, 2015 Share #8 Posted March 16, 2015 Well that would certainly be something to see! Saw a low numbered one on Ebay long ago, look forward to what others have to say!
cplnorton Posted March 16, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted March 16, 2015 Well the thing is, I think if someone would fake one, they would put it in the known serial range. IF someone knew enough to fake one, they would put the serial below a 1000 I would think. Here is a highlighted pic to show what I'm seeing the 1200
cplnorton Posted March 16, 2015 Author Share #10 Posted March 16, 2015 Man I just can't get a solid pic of it. Here is straight on.
cplnorton Posted March 16, 2015 Author Share #11 Posted March 16, 2015 This just looks like acid damage.
cplnorton Posted March 16, 2015 Author Share #12 Posted March 16, 2015 And it almost looks like something was on the other side too and possibly removed. Right under the Collins logo.
Reeder3 Posted March 16, 2015 Share #13 Posted March 16, 2015 It looks just like a later version of the Collins #18 to me with aluminum rivets vs brass. Also, the handle isn't the green horn handle. Cool knife though. Makes me wish I had kept mine a couple of years ago.
doyler Posted March 16, 2015 Share #14 Posted March 16, 2015 The blade looks like it has acid damage. This does not look like pitting. P1220027.jpg P1220028.jpg Often this type of pitting/staining is caused from the scabbard. When the scabbard becomes wet or damp the steel and leather will react to each other. With old leather tanning process the acid can work its way out of the leather and damage the finnish. dustin Posted March 16, 2015 Share #15 Posted March 16, 2015 This machete has been dicked with 6 ways till Sunday, Raider machetes were of the green horn handle. I think your seeing anomalies from all the wear, it has a lot of character that's for sure.
cplnorton Posted March 16, 2015 Author Share #16 Posted March 16, 2015 My understanding was the last time I researched these, which was a couple years ago, that many experts thought some of the black handle ones were issued as well. Not just the green handle ones. Am I thinking wrong?
Still-A-Marine Posted March 17, 2015 Share #17 Posted March 17, 2015 I think it's really a nice addition to your collection. But I don't think you'll ever be able to tie it to the Raiders. Bill
