USMC-RECON0321 Posted March 4, 2015 Share #1 Posted March 4, 2015 I actually found this grouping in the Gun show next to the SOS about 15 minutes before leaving for Michigan. I required me to re-organize the load in the back of my truck, but it was worth the effort! The seller owns an antique arms store down in Dallas TX and had the trunk brought into his shop when he purchased it. This is a USMC Officer's Trunk grouping of a 1959 US Naval Academy graduate, Lt. Thomas C. Monaghan. Lt. Monaghan was then assigned to 2nd Anglico. I haven't done any research yet, but there are two letters in his trunk dated 1963 and still assigned to 2nd Anglico. This is a very interesting trunk and grouping, starting with the custom made trunk with deployment or tactical markings of some kind and the coved topped sides and matching top. Here are some of the highlights found inside the trunk: · 2 of his US Naval Academy Dog tags · Un-issued still in the packaging 1942 dated US 45 leather holster. (Interesting that the paper foil bag it came in is dated 1957?) · P41 USMC HBT jacket with a white sewn on name tag. I'm thinking this was possibly from his time in the USNA or some other training? · USMC Map bag with several California military topographical maps and writing utensils. · USMC M1961 web belt with 11 snaps for the m-14 rifle mag pouches. · 2 Un-opened John Wayne can openers · Reserve Parachute pull handle · Box of business cards for Lt Monaghan, with a M.C. Exchange Camp Lejeune NC price tag. · Misc Books, USMC and USNA · 1957 Field jacket liner · Nylon harness · 2 letters and much more Many pictures to follow. As always, I would appreciate any information or history to the Marine or his gear you can provide. Thanks Troy

USMC-RECON0321 Posted March 4, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted March 4, 2015 NOS 1942 dated 45 leather holster in a 1957 dated bag? Any guesses on this? I've heard of this with other items over the years also, NOS Items being boxed or bagged in later dated packaging. One was an m3 fighting knife in 1960s packaging. blitzkrieg gsd Posted March 5, 2015 Share #20 Posted March 5, 2015 Great trunk group and to find it at the gun show that was some good luck congrats. I like everything about it my favorite part is that M61 belt you got with it. I picked up a couple M14 M61 pouches at the show myself but couldn't find the belt for nothing. So if I would have saw that trunk I would have got it just for the belt. All the other cool stuff would have just been the gravey.
