med-dept Posted February 25, 2015 Share #1 Posted February 25, 2015 I am sorry if this is in the wrong place of the Forum, but I really am truly devastated and wanted to get this out there right away so that someone, somewhere may be able to help. I was recently lucky enough to be gifted a large grouping belonging to 2d Lt. Mary M. Mueller who served with the Army Nurse Corps in various General Hospitals in the US throughout 1945, mainly treating those patients who had been evacuated back to the ZI. I arranged for the courier to collect the items from her address (in Minnesota) and deliver them to me in the United Kingdom. Two separate couriers were responsible, one being DHL and the other UPS. The lady unfortunately did not pack the footlocker, but rather simply applied the shipping labels directly to it (without locking it in anyway). Upon receipt of the footlocker - I discovered that the entire Class A uniform was missing / had been stolen! It had been packed in bags and stored underneath the locker tray, but there was no sign of it at all upon receipt. The missing items are as follows: 1 x ANC Class A Tunic 1 x ANC Class A Skirt 1 x ANC Garrison Cap 1 x Overseas ANC Garrison Cap 1 x ANC Peaked Cap I have included a photograph of the entire grouping (minus the uniform), and some photographs of the uniform too. I have spoken to both DHL and UPS and they've each launched a separate investigation to find the missing items, but of course it might be that they're in Customs or some other place, and I really want to get the grouping back together (for obvious reasons). If anyone can help in absolutely any way, please get in touch! Yes, unfortunately it looks like the items may have been misplaced, but the fact that they were packaged underneath the tray means someone must have removed them, because all other contents are intact. (knife was numbered) The label came off the package and it was sold at auction in Atlanta. Absolutely nothing I could do about it, I had to refund the buyer and was out my knife. Just saying if the label came off or anything came out of that trunk it went to USPS auction and fast. The mess with my knife happened all in about 3 weeks. Keep checking Ebay or Etsy. Patchcollector Posted March 5, 2015 Share #6 Posted March 5, 2015 Everyone on the Forum that sees this will keep an eye out for the missing items.That she did'nt make the footlocker more secure is a hard lesson learned,I'm afraid. One thing that stands out for me is that the thief did'nt keep more stuff,which indicates to me that they were'nt interested in it for any historical value.They are probably just going to see how much money they can get for the uniform.I would'nt be surprised to see this turn up on eBay someday.. I agree that someone probably took it thinking that would/might be the item worth the most out of all that "stuff" (to a non-collector). I wouldn't doubt that it might come up for sale, somewhere. doyler Posted March 5, 2015 Share #9 Posted March 5, 2015 I echo Brians sentiments.Hope it ends well But I see this as being gone.Sad to say with all the exposure of the reality programs and touting the dollar values of things Im sure it was taken for a reason as it was singles out of all the other items.Smaller items wouldnt really be missed but the uniform was the main statement piece here and most identifiable. Patchcollector Posted March 5, 2015 Share #10 Posted March 5, 2015 Just wanted to add an additional thought.Whoever stole the uniform may have not wanted the other items because if they tried to sell the group it would be easily recognized.The uniform by itself would be difficult to ID without any markings,and more easily sold. Indeed, I could not believe that the lady hadn't sealed the footlocker in some way, despite my advice to do exactly that! With regard to the uniform, it had the following insignia: 1 x Army Service Forces SSI (left shoulder) 1 x Meritorious Unit Commendation (right cuff) 1 x "U.S." cipher on each collar 1 x Caduceus+N pins on each lapel 1 x 2d Lt. Bar on each epaulette In addition, the uniform has a small laundry tag on the inside of the Jacket, just above the hem. It reads: Lt. Mueller. Thanks for all of your continued help! Regards, Ben.
