WW2 504th PIR pocket patch

All,

I am somewhat confused with this patch. According to one website, this variation of patch was not actually worn by the members of the 504th, but may have been a period piece for purchase by vets or collectors.

Also, is this patch has apparently been copied as well and I am not even sure of it. It is definitely and older patch and has paper residue from being mounted in an album.

Thanks,

CB

These patches were made for collectors in the late 40s early 50s.The real ones are ultra ultra rare and in 36 years have owned only three of them. The one that started this post is still collectible because it fills a spot in collections that would be almost impossible to fill.A real one sells for 6-8 thousand dollars the copy 350-500.Scotty PS here is a scan of a real one I sold.

Here is a copy of this chenille jacket patch that members need to be aware of as it could be a very expensive mistake.

Tonomachi is 100% correct so as he said study the differences on the two shown. This is the reason to belong to the Forum our combined knowledge lets us all learn something new every day.PS if you find ultra rare insignia be aware that anything rare has been reproduced and a lot of dealers will sell you with a straight face a piece of crap and tell you its from a vets lot.If you send a PM to any dealer who knows real from fake they will be more than happy to give their opinion on anything or steer you to someone who will help you.Scotty

  • 4 years later...

Here is one that I don't recall seeing before (could have just forgotten). Not sure if it is a straight up reproduction or some variation of the Chutes-n-Boots collectors/veterans patch.

Here are a couple of references I saved in my 504th PIR folder. Apologies as I cant remember where I sourced the reference. At that time I was learning about my wife's grandfather who was in Baker Co 504th PIR when one of the repro chenille pocket patches popped up on eBay. The real Chenille pocket patch is a looker and is not as common as the 82nd SSI sewn to an A-2.

Might be too hard on Boots type patch in calling it a reproduction ;this is a very nuanced situation and different era and purpose as to why patch was made. Problem for us is that we have no one alive to ask what was the thinking and purpose of making these items. Technically you maybe right but not same as today reproductions which is to cheat and deceive.
