what will this mean to collectors

Not much....to me anyway.Im sure some interprising individual(s) will try to "age" them and pass them off as real depending on how well they are made.

Case made a Commerative a few years ago. Some thought they would really gain in value. The commeratives can still be found.

These might have some effect on the market as far as the 92/98 reproduction Case V-42's go. Commemorative or special run knives live in a different world of collecting from the originals.

At suggested price of $549.99 I would rather put that toward an original knife.

Agree 100%. That's an absurd price. Collectors "special editions" rarely become collectibles. My place holder for a V42 is a cheap Chinese replica like this one:

Wow tough crowd.

Case has worked on this project for 5 years now. They were asked to recreate the V-42 by the First Special Service Force Association, not a paperweight but a real knife. Along the way they picked up full support of just about every Special Forces Association in existence. They also have full support of active duty Special Forces including Generals Mulholland at JSSOC and Cleveland at USASOC. This is a pretty big deal in the Special Forces community.

There will be a difference to protect the collectors of the original V-42. Can't say much more now, stay tuned.

All the best

I'm not a knife expert, just have a small collection of the "basic" types.I'll probably never own an authentic V-42.One of the "prettiest" knives made IMO,it has one purpose;to "take out" the enemy.I seem to recall reading that they were not that popular with the guys that they were originally issued to,as they are a single function tool, and the Troops wanted something more versatile.I'm wondering how practical these are,and how many Troops will actually carry one of these?

I have to ask this, I can see that the V42 is a one purpose knife, so isn't the M3 and the Fairbairn-Sykes, from what I hear so is the Gerber MK2 but they also appear to be made for only one reason, to kill. What am I missing. Thanks Mike

Yes I agree, they are all specifically designed with one thing in mind.I would think that they would appeal to a select few,and for a narrow range of missions, such as the OBL

compound raid.Such missions would likely not require a multi purpose knife, but for everyday "humping" it may be necessary to carry a more versatile piece,or carry more than one knife.

I'm of the opinion that the M3 and the subsequent bayonets based on it's blade pattern have shown themselves in practice to be more versatile than one might first expect them to be.

Good point.(No pun intended :) )The M3 seems like it would be able to handle more varied use than say the F-S,Gerber,or the V-42.

  • 1 month later...

There is a detailed article by Frank on the March 2015 issue of KNIFE WORLD on this knife. No doubt it's a well made knife, but I still think it's eventually destined to join the Holiday Barbies in the land of Special Collectors Edition. I'm sorry Frank; I hope I'm wrong...

I've seen recently where the open auction prices on the Case 1992 and 1998 are going in the mid $400 to low $500 range. It will be interesting to me to see how these new knives are marketed regarding quantities and wholesaling. I do think in this neighborhood the interest will likely remain towards originals.

I have seen a couple go for under $3000.00 recently. One a coupel months back didnt hit $2k and sold on line as I recall.Prices can be all over the boad at times.

Havent seen the knew one but Its hard pressed to beat the "original" no matter how well or hard they try.

This One of mine was carried on the Assault on LaDifensia. And was used "to do the job it was made for" according to the man who carried it.

I just saw the new v-42 at a trade show I go to every year. I thought they were really cool and ordered 3 for my retail store. I am a Case Authorized Dealer. I bought one of the ones made a number of years ago on the first commemorative. I probably will never own an original but I like the idea that it's Case making it, not some Chinese knockoff. I even liked the optional wooden display case for it. I hate to see collectors turning up their noses at it. Doing so could make the company less likely to want to do such projects and that's too bad.

Go ahead and turn your nose up at an exact copy from the company, I hope others won't. By the way it will be dated 2015 so it won't be easily monkeyed with.

As a dealer, I'm sure you do. Not so sure about the rest of us, which BTW, were not polled by Case to see if there was interest. Best of luck to you with the three you got; I hope you sell dozens more. We'll see how many collectors here chip out $500 ea. for these repops. I may just buy one when they put them on the clearance shelves for a couple of hundred bucks like they did with the first two "Collector Editions."

I'd have a hard time laying out $500 for a reproduction, especially when I can buy a really nice minty and real M3 for the same money. To each his own, I reckon.
