Ok, my ? is I have a m51 pile cap and I would like to add the rank of S Sgt. to the hat. I am not sure if they added a chevron pin or a patch. Any info would be great.

Thank you

First you might get more replies if you posted this somewhere other than "18th Century-WWI".  Second, there was no SSG rank during the Korean War.  Sergeants wore the insignia (three chevrons and a rocker) formerly used by SSG's and the three chevron insignia was dropped.  You will occasionally see NCO's with a cloth chevron, most typically the P1948 chevrons, tacked or pinned to their pile cap.  Most of the time they don't wear anything on them.

Occasionally you might find a Sgt wearing the 1951 style chevron on his pile cap, generally they pinned on the small 1948 chevrons like B229 said.

There are also theater made thick brass screwback badges they could wear.

So what you are saying is they droped the rank s/sgt. So the Sgt rank would be 3 at the top and the rocker below then the next rank would be Sgt first class correct?

Correct.  The rank/grade structure was revised in 1948 and the 3 stripe insignia for Sergeant and the rank of S/Sgt was eliminated.

still confuses me too but lets add a helpful chart and an example picture taken by my grandfather in 1950
