These tags were picked up by a picker at a estate sale and then auctioned off on eBay. He was a replacement to the 2nd Marine division in January of 1944 and then assigned to I Co 3/6 as a automatic rifleman. He took part in the assault of Saipan and was wounded on the 17th of June. I suspect that he was wearing the tags at the time he was wounded. If I remember correctly the 3/6's lines were breached on the 17th by the Japanese in one spot and then the assault was destroyed.

Great find, 2ndMarDiv has such a heavy history on Saipan. Can't help but wonder two things:

1- wonder how that damage got there?

2- how did I miss these? :rolleyes::D:P

Let us know if you find any specific narrative on "I" Company at Saipan!

I suspect shrapnel but you never know if he was clearing a jam in his weapon. As far as I Co history some of the war diaries are missing for the 2nd Marine Division at Saipan. My best bet is to get his service records . They should have how he was wounded and where on his body.

Holy smokes. That's a killer set of tags. Definitely let us know what you come up with on him!

  • 1 month later...

I found his casualty card and he was wounded by shrapnel to the knee. I suspect there my be other smaller wounds that are not recorded.
