This is not the first time that I have seen this being done. I have seen a few pics long these lines.
The question is "Whats going on here?"
I have a few theories, but does anybody actually know why this was done?

This pic is on page 42 of Paul Miraldi's Uniforms and equipment of US Military Advisors in Vietnam.
He offers no explanation other than to note it.

The badge on his beret is quite interesting too.

Are you sure it is an AK magazine and not an Armalite type one?
Somewhere in a dark past, I saw photos of these banana-type magazines before and they were not Russian made (or similar).

He is ARVN Armored.

It sure looks like an AK mag to me. http://www.usmilitar...tyle_emoticons/default/think.gif

There was an experimental 30rd Mag for the M-16 but it looked different (a lot shorter then this).
I'll see if I can find a pic of one.

Wow, that is crazy, more info please!

I remember reading a number of years ago that some M4s were being modded to accept 7.62 rounds and AK magazines allowing soldiers to use enemy captured munitions.

its just an m-16 with a ak mag in it,the early armalite mags had a "waffle" pattern on the side(sorry i have no pic of it),also the 7.62x39 cal ar's are a fairly new invention,(post-ban).,i think it was just a photo-op,you never hand over a loaded weapon to anyone,

There is some photo retouching going on here. The AK magazine will not fit in the magazine well of an M-16, it is both too long and too wide to fit. It sort of looks like the early AR-18 30 round magazine but it is still too curved for that as well.

This I have not heard of. The modifications are extensive(replace the barrel and bolthead, change the buffer and the bolt hold open if you want it to last longer than 300 rounds etc. I have built around 3500 AR-15 rifles so have a little knowledge on them), they were working on a 6.8X43 that provided better terminal ballistics but that seems to have been halted.

There was a company(USA Mags if memory serves) that made an AK magazine with a modified tower that allowed
a person to have a high capacity magazine instead of the 5 round magazine that you got with the AR-15 in 7.62X39.

If you look you can see that this is a very highly modified AR. The mag well has been cut away and they use various inserts to use whichever magazine is available.

Unfortunately not, it was in my personal collection of photos found on the internet.

I found your photo:

http://www.biggerham...es/colt762.html

along with an explanation of using 7.62 mm ammo in a modified AR-15

http://www.biggerham.../rawlesfaq.html

See the section "On 7.62 x39 AR-15 magazines" about halfway down the page. Supposedly these modifications are being made to make use of cheap imported Chinese ammunition. I'll let the experts debate that one!

This still does not answer the question about the Vietnam period photo at the top of this thread.

Bang on Gil,

the newer stuff while interesting, does not answer the Vietnam question.
And remember this isn't the only Vietnam picture with such a set up.

I have no way of checking if what I am thinking may work.
So one of you will have to do it for me. http://www.usmilitar...tyle_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif

Before I go any further...........

Will a 5.56mm rounds go into an AK-47 magazine and will the mag function? - I know they are not meant or made for it, but will they?

If they will I will move my theory forward and if they don't I'll drop it.

Normally the AK magazine will accept three to four rounds and then will eject any other rounds you attempt to add. The feed lips are wider than
an AR magazine and that is why they don't work.

Thanks KSP45,

here is a quote from the thread that he mentions.

"The NRA magazine 'American Rifleman' runs stuff from the past on the last page (or used to). There was a Viet Nam war-era blurb stating that ARVN forces felt outgunned by the larger magazine capacity of the AK-47, and had engineered an AK mag body fitted to a 20 rd. M16 magazine to increase the capacity of the M16."

And some more pics.

You can put at least 30, and most likely more, 5.56mm rounds in an AK mag. With the correct modifications for the M-16's magazine catch and further mods to the feed lips an AK magazine can be made to fit. Now whether or not it functions properly is another thing.

I guess that the ARVN did not like being under gunned by the NVA and some units decided upon this as a solution.

I'll go on with Mr-X on that, this is not just to show off or whatever.
I was found about 10-15 photos of ARVN troups having the mixte couple M16-AK mag in VN.
I have always wandered how it could fit in.

Here is a guy from the military region 3, late war.
