Personal Use Knives

I know the collectors on this board like to collect knives that have a personal connection to someone that served in the military. How about those personal use knives that are connected to the collectors themselves? I've carried several different knives through the years, to include a steel pocket knive, a Buck knive, and a Gerber Mark II (which now belongs to my son and has made multiple trips to the Middle East). Here is a knife that I bought in the PX (or Rod and Gun Club, I can't remember which) at Fort Bragg. It was a boot knife that I modified to fit on the inside of my right leg so I could carry it on those occassions when I was performing as a safety on jumps, or on jumps where I didn't have to carry a ruck sack (my Gerber was attached upside down to my ruck so I could use it on those occasions). It's an Explorer II double-edged blade that's 5 inches long. I picked it so that I had an easily manipulated knife that I didn't have to worry about what side the blade was on. I attached it to the inside of my right leg so that it wouldn't catch on other jumpers or on the various items inside the airplane (at least not easily). I used OD colored duct tape and my wifes glue gun to create the sheath, and the straps attach with Velcro. Worked pretty good and never did unattach from my leg during the jumps.

I did a lot of experimenting before I was happy with a field knife. Started out with a Buck 110, then a Gerber MK2, then a Bowie Knife w/ 10" blade, next a Kiffe Repro M1910 Bolo (way too heavy), a Gerber Pete's Friend Folder. Finally in 1974, I went to a Camillus MK2 which I carried in either a leather sheath or a MK2 fiber sheath until 1991. Also in 1982 started carrying a Swiss Army Champion all the time (still have it every day on my belt)for everyday use, the MK2 for field duty, and parachute jumps, and on occasion an Ontario Machete attached to my rucksack, terrain dictated. The Buck 110, Gerber folder, and Swiss Army, were everyday carry knives, and were in conjunction w/ the bigger field knives. SKIP

I carried a Gerber MII from 1989 until around 2000, when I switched to a SOG Government. The SOG was a nice knife, but I replaced it with a Strider Mark1A in 2004. Paired with a beat-up Gerber 06, it's been my service knife for over 10 years with service in Colombia, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Other than specialized knives, like the one I made for jumping or a 10 inch bolo for adverse terrain, it seems most folks have a 6 or 7 inch fixed blade knife, and a folder with a 3-3 and a half inch blade. Beyond that it's what feels good and can be carried comfortably and within easy reach.

  • 5 months later...

Here's the Bucklite I carried on my webgear, somewhere I have a picture of it during Desert Storm:

I collect BuckLItes

I exclusively EDC Bucklites because other knives make my pants sag!!!

I mostly collect fixed blades

Because there is nothing like fishing/hunting with a WWII fightin' knife strapped to your waist...:)

For non miltary I like Buck 119 or Glock 81 or Camillus

And don't forget about The Sharpfinger

AKA 152OT
