USMCman01 Posted December 23, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted December 23, 2014 LOL....no, I saw it when it was done for quite a few days. Although I did get a great condition P2 with '43 dated Vollrath canteen for $25.49 which was listed as an army canteen. This was listed as a non-military cover. That is the way to get good deals...items that are listed with the wrong name.
carbinekid Posted December 23, 2014 Share #4 Posted December 23, 2014 Yep I was watching that one, then forgot to bid on it. Oops, wish I could say it's the first time I've that too.

BROBS Posted December 23, 2014 Share #6 Posted December 23, 2014 Yep I was watching that one, then forgot to bid on it. Oops, wish I could say it's the first time I've that too. this happens to me all the time.. I nearly get physically sick about it sometimes. I missed an M1 web sling near mint with great markings on ebay......sold for $15. When I saw that I was pissed all night. pointless, I know. but I was. -Brian
USMCman01 Posted December 24, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted December 24, 2014 Brian, it happens to all of us. Keep looking and you'll find something else. I happened to see this a few days after this ended and found the P2 I talked about above. It happens like this: ooooo look something I would bid on, nahh it will go up to high. *Next day* Huh, sold for $25, dangit. All the time ~Matt
BROBS Posted December 24, 2014 Share #8 Posted December 24, 2014 Matt, I know it's stupid and there are always more items... it's just that feeling in your gut that you screwed up by not getting it. also it seems like when you are looking for something, they are all high priced. if you aren't looking... you will find one for dirt cheap. -Brian
David D Posted December 24, 2014 Share #9 Posted December 24, 2014 Yeah, I agree. I lost a grouping because I bid to early and lost it. Wasn't in a good mood the rest of the day -Dave

doyler Posted December 24, 2014 Share #13 Posted December 24, 2014 Hahaha no kidding! A recent pickup? -Brian Found it earlier this year. I also found another canteen on another trip for a $1 at a flea market.Sitting in the middle of a table full of cartoon character glasses, ash trays, rusty advertising tins etc.Asked the seller how much?He said...."anything on the table is a buck".Didnt argue handed the man his dollar and the deal was done. It wasnt the prettiest enameled canteen I had ever seen but for a buck it couldnt sit there in shame with the cartoon glasses.
USA.mil.history Posted December 25, 2014 Share #14 Posted December 25, 2014 Sometimes it is just shear dumb luck. A few years ago at a yard sale I bought two canteens for $5 a piece because they were both 1918 dated.I thought the cover on the one was a Japanese copy or something because it was 1: unlined 2: the hanger was "too long and mounted too high" and 3: no US stamp on the cover. Yep, about a year later as I got into USMC gear I discovered "OMG, I already have a mint 2nd pattern canteen cover and I didn't even realize it". Just dumb luck....go figure. Agreed You never know whats going to pop out of the wood work. A buddy and I decided to ride to a one day outdoor antique show thats held on labor day.We got there and couldnt find a place to park the bikes so we went around the block and found a parking lot.THere was a local having a garge sale next to the parking lot so we thought we would walk through it quick.Walked in and saw a few tables of candles, home decor, silk flowers and racks of womens clothing. My buddy did real quick survey and out the door went.First impresson wasnt looking very good.I went over to a table in the back and in the middle of piles of CDs and kitchen stuff was a mint WW1 canteen in a mint mounted cover with leather strap....price $5.I caught up to him and showed him the canteen. He couldnt believe I found it at the "garage" sale.
