Dear,

I am looking to any additional source of information concerning 1/4-TON 4x4 UTILITY TRUCK, XM151E2 – aluminum body and frame. Any test reports, photographs, manufacturer’s blue print drawings are welcomed. Need this information for my colleague, who would like to start the restoration of XM151E2 – aluminum body as complete truck. Bellow I have listed all information, which I was able to gather from either copies of testing reports, discussions on G503 and g838 websites.

Reports:

  • DEVELOPMENT OF 1/4-TON 4x4 UTILITY TRICK, M151 SERIES (Technical Information Report, 1958)

Confirmed information:

  • Ordered to be manufactured in 1956, total two trucks
  • The two XM151E2 trucks were delivered in July 1957 and were scheduled for testing at APG and Fort Knox
  • During tests re-designated as M151E2
  • The final APG report on the M151E2, issued in February 1958 mentioned many fracture failures to the aluminum body, and it had been considered unsatisfactory

Not verified information:

  • Unknown number of additional XM151E2 trucks bodies were manufactured, had welded aluminum gusseted reinforcements in all of the listed failure areas (Ford Archives testing report)
  • Possible testing of XM151E2 truck by USMC

Thank you for any information posted here, or trough PM or email.

Best regards JAROSLAV

Looks like your friend bought the one that RivRad had for sale. Really interesting piece, the only major item that might be very difficult to find is the correct engine. Not the same as the standard M151 engine.

Regarding the USMC use, they did not test them or use them until the A1 series came out. The USMC data plate that you are talking about was added later as it is marked as an A1.

Austinger,

yes it should be same vehicle, it will be long project and research.

The vehicle is without correct engine at the moment, the question is what type was installed originally. There is unconfirmed information, that there was installed Pinto motor and that motor hood was raised. Hard to confirm as there is no original motor hood and wind shield, these were replaced and are later standard production type.

Yes it has USMC data plate, which was added later, the question is if the aluminum body was later equiped with standard parts and used as regular vehicle with marines. There are some parts and accessories, which are characteristic for use with Marines.

There is lot interesting details to discuss, will be adding photographs as time allows for further research.
