CW4AFB Posted December 20, 2014 Share #1 Posted December 20, 2014 Gents and ladies--I recently picked these two canteen covers as part of a larger deal--among the many things I know very little about, field gear is one of them---obviously the USMC stamp on the front and USMC button snaps point this out as a Marine canteen cover but from which era? any other info? the second cover is nicely stamped with a manufacturer's name and a 1917 date but it appears to be missing a strap that would go around it and attach to something--in it's place is what appears to be a leather shoe lace---ideas on uses? type of units that would use it? Help me out of my pre-Christmas knowledge shortage...I should be out Christmas shopping but here I am trying to dig up more info on two dirty old canteen covers...sad, very sad I know. best for the holidays to all here, Al
atb Posted December 20, 2014 Share #2 Posted December 20, 2014 Second one is a M1917 Mounted Canteen Cover. It is missing the leather strap with snap hook to attach to the soldier's saddle.
j_cochran Posted December 21, 2014 Share #3 Posted December 21, 2014 The first cover looks to be a USMC version of the early mounted canteen cover. The USMC eagle snaps would place it before WWI.

Hessian Posted December 24, 2014 Share #6 Posted December 24, 2014 Hello Could you post a photo of the back of the USMC canteen? I've never seen that particular set up before. Also in the inside of the flaps/ears, is there any markings? Thanks DM
CW4AFB Posted December 24, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted December 24, 2014 Duke --not a problem--Give me a day or so and I will take a bunch of shots and load them up here. regards, Al Hello Could you post a photo of the back of the USMC canteen? CW4AFB Posted December 24, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted December 24, 2014 I got lucky and got some time today--I'm avoiding the kitchen where the cooks are--certainly don't need any "Hey you" work assignments on Christmas eve---here's the pictures you asked for: Merry Christmas to all here. Hessian Posted December 25, 2014 Share #9 Posted December 25, 2014 Hey Al, Thanks for the updated pics... I know what you mean about staying out of the kitchen... The max effective range of a "hey can you help with...." request is about 15 meters I've found.... I'm still learning about early USMC field gear... I've never seen this particular set up on a eagle snap USMC canteen along with the "USMC". I'm hoping someone with more knowledge will weigh in here but it may be you have something quite rare. Merry Christmas to all
MattOravik Posted December 27, 2014 Share #10 Posted December 27, 2014 That is a really interesting USMC canteen cover. It was modified with the removal of the standard belt hook and addition of the cavalry hanger type. The USMC buttons look completely rimless so I think it was a very early cover. Later buttons have a slight rim. I haven't seen one with the big USMC stencil on the front. It's usually inside the flap. That cover is a winner! -Matt.
