k2b Posted November 25, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 25, 2014 Ever since coming across a photo of my grandfather wearing a D-1 jacket during his time in the AAF a while back, I've been stuck on wanting to get one myself. A decent-condition original is far out of my price range (and while I'd enjoy keeping such a jacket up, I'd also like to have one I could wear now and again), so I'm thinking of turning to repros. Does anyone here have any experience/opinions on specific brands' productions of this jacket? Eyeballing, Eastman looked closest to pictures I've been able to dig up. That said, I'm somewhat out of my depth and would prefer to get something with specifications as close to the original as possible instead of one that "looks kind of right". (Eastman is quite expensive, too, though I have a feeling that'll be true of any brand.) Any experiences or advice on D-1 reproductions in general would be much appreciated. Sabrejet Posted November 25, 2014 Share #2 Posted November 25, 2014 You're already aware of the Eastman D-1. It's not a "lookalike"...it's a perfect replica. Like all of their products it's top quality but, as you know, such quality does not come cheap. In US currency it equates to just over $1000...plus whatever transAtlantic shipping might be. There's another UK-based manufacturer called Aero Leathers which also does a couple of D-1 variants, but these are in the same kind of price range as Eastman's. You might find something a little less expensive closer to home? That said, you get what you pay for. If it's a top-notch accurate replica you want it's still not going to be cheap, whichever side of the big-pond it's on! http://www.aeroleatherclothing.com/product-detail.php?id=78 http://www.eastmanleather.com/product_info.php?products_id=
vintageproductions Posted November 27, 2014 Share #3 Posted November 27, 2014 Ian hit it on the head. Eastman makes the best copies around and if you decide to buy one, you won't regret it.
63 RECON Posted November 27, 2014 Share #4 Posted November 27, 2014 Always wanted a D1 but just doesnt get cold enough here apart from maybe 1 or 2 days. Eastman do make some nice stuff but so do Real McCoys NZ. I have an A2 and A1 from these dudes. The A1 is part of their "The Few" range. http://www.thefewmfg.com/data_list.cgi?name=THE_FEW_FLIGHT_JACKET http://www.realmccoys.co.nz/cata.html
k2b Posted December 1, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted December 1, 2014 Thanks for the info, all. Looks like I'll be taking the extra time to save up for an Eastman!
