camillus Posted November 24, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 24, 2014 Hi, I am looking at a bayonet on ebay but can't tell much the metal is greased but the handle looks go what do you think thanks Mike http://www.ebay.com/itm/271681114224?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
SKIPH Posted November 24, 2014 Share #2 Posted November 24, 2014 Difficult to say. Why would a greased blade, which alludes to being unused, be in a M8A1 scabbard w/ a frayed retainer strap, and the M1910 belt hook cut off. Just speculation, but he blade could have been sharpened, finish gone, and the seller put the grease on it to hide the blade condition. Just my two cents. mattsmilitary Posted November 24, 2014 Share #4 Posted November 24, 2014 I have had knives in the past where they were greased for "storage purposes". Just a thought!
Bill in VA Posted November 25, 2014 Share #5 Posted November 25, 2014 It looks like the tip is broken off too.
Leighman1964 Posted November 25, 2014 Share #6 Posted November 25, 2014 I see that the seller states it's in "packing grease." If so, the grease (cosmoline) would have been applied after a rebuild and not from the factory. Prior to bidding or purchase, I would question the scabbard's missing rention strap and as noted, the bent/broken tip. No armorer worth his salt would allow either flaw to pass as "serviceable." Rebuilt US bayonets were never required to be sharpened but they WERE required to be pointy. I'm not bashing the seller as I do not know him/her but the bayonet's condition (as pictured) is not something I would spend too much $$$ on.
