Nack Posted November 13, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 13, 2014 So, I don't usually buy knives, but I thought this was pretty cool. It was reportedly carried by an AAF fellow. There's a name stamped on the back, but I haven't been able to make it out as of yet. I think it's a WWII Western L77, but the shape is a bit off (there's a flare or whatever you call it to the end of the blade). Maybe it was modified a touch at the base machine shop? Thoughts appreciated!

Reeder3 Posted November 13, 2014 Share #4 Posted November 13, 2014 Yes, western l77. Looks like owner wanted a bowie tip.
Nack Posted November 13, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted November 13, 2014 "Bowie tip" - that's it - thanks!
doyler Posted November 13, 2014 Share #6 Posted November 13, 2014 Nice with the original scabbard. CLIP POINT OR BOWIE point I guess was the owners intent.
Nack Posted November 13, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted November 13, 2014 Thanks, Doyler! I'm not up to speed on the terminology, and I was wondering if the scabbard was original to the knife. I did a bit of research and it looks like there was quite a bit of variation to these knives, and to a lesser extent, the scabbards. Nice to hear it's a good one! byf41 Posted November 13, 2014 Share #8 Posted November 13, 2014 That is the correct style sheath for the knife but as you said there are many variations .
ccyooper Posted November 13, 2014 Share #9 Posted November 13, 2014 You have a classic 2 line stitch scabbard/sheath which about 95% of the L77's came with. They came with either small or large blued or white rivets. Sometimes you will see them with a single stitch border but I am always leery of those because they are the easiest to forge. The hardest to find and more often seen with the Western L76, is the Western commando scabbard. It is shaped more like a USMC stiletto sheath. Nice find, just don't stab yourself with that tip sticking out of the sheath. Regards, CC
Nack Posted November 13, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted November 13, 2014 Many thanks! I can see how people can get into collecting just blades. And great pic!
