Alpha Docks, home of HCU-1 after Vietnam, now home of MDSU-1 Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit One - Alpha Docks was home to the SERVRON 5 Salvage Forces (ARS, ATF, ATS, YRST) with all of the single men living aboard the vessels.  Although we had full recompression tanks aboard our ships, we only had one HM 'Doc' aboard each of them so the Medical Officer (DV) aboard the HCU-1 Salvage Barge (YRST-1) was our Squadron Doctor.  Each of our Junk Boats had a crew of about 75 Pirates, uh, officers & men.

USN Divers could be members of a number of shore establishments including SRF's, Submarine commands, Station & Shipyard diving lockers, EOD, HCU-1 & HCU-2 (later MDSU-1/2), Service Force (SERVPAC, SERVLANT, SERVRONS), Weapons and Scientific development labs, etc. They were also assigned to diving lockers on AD, AR & AS type ships.

But from WWII to the 1990's their primary seaborne billets were on ARS's (Rescue Salvage), ASR's (Submarine Rescue), ATF’s (Fleet Tugs) and other seagoing tug type vessels - ATA, ATR & ATS.

Time to delve into the ATF Fleet Tugs - all named for American Indian Tribes across the USA
