Hello,WW2JAKE,the ribbon bar shown in your post is for the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal,Authorized on December 4th,1961,awarded to members of the U.S.Armed Forces who after July 1st,1958 participated in U.S military operations,U.S.operations in direct support of the United Nations,or U.S.operations of assistance for friendly foreign nations or in danger from hostile actions,July 1965 saw the creation of the Vietnam Service Medal,VN vets were first awarded that AFEM,which they could later exchange for the VSM if they wished,My Dad was awarded the AFEM for serving in the Blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) he was a Gunner's Mate in the U.S.N. Some military award facts,to help you organise your Family Record, the AFEM was more likely your Dad's ribbon, not your Grandfather's,as he served 1945-48,that is too early for him to have been awarded an AFEM. I hope I have helped you some,Kind Regards from Iowa, Jeff

you are absolutely right, I wasn't looking at what it was i was looking at where it was, but I know it wasn't my dad's because though it is in the chest it is in a box of my grandpa's stuff (he is my step grandfather) so I know it isn't my dad's cause my dad was out of the military 6 years before he even married my grandma, I think it may be my step uncle's if that's what you'd call him? He was in the navy during vietnam I don't know much about his history or his brothers who also was except one of their ships and one story one told me about taking a ship of marines there but thanks for catching that because I likely wouldn't have
