I purchased a tintype with a soldier wearing a kepi with hat badge.

At first, I thought it was some sort of Ordnance (bomb with flame) but after looking closer, the bottom circular part looks too rounded and the top doesn't resemble other "flames" I have seen.

It does resemble an early USMC hat badge, but I cannot find photos of them worn on an actual kepi.  Additionally, if it is USMC it is being worn sideways.

Any help or thoughts are appreciated.

Almost looks like the very early officers EGAs that were worn on the Patrol Coat....

If that is an EGA you have a heck of a score on your hands.... congrats!

Appears to definitely be an EGA...I can see continents, the eagle, and maybe even a fouled rope. Looks like it's being worn correctly, but the anchor flukes are not visible or bent/trenched. Looks like a standard enlisted P1892...but the distinct continents make me also consider officer emblem. Do you have any more of the Marine in the image?

EGA's were definitely worn on kepis...a fantastic portrait sold a few months back on eBay, but I can't find the image at the moment. He was an enlisted man wearing the P1892

Appears to be a very nice image

Unfortunately there is not much of the uniform visible.

It is a comical/ cartoon view.  The mule and cart was a painting and the subject stood behind it to appear in the scene.

These were a popular item in the 1880s- 90s, often found at Fairs and carnivals.

It's a reversed image, common on these old tip types.  You are seeing the stock of the anchor, and the flukes are on the other side.  Look at it in a mirror and it will look normal. Very nice early picture!!
