Good morning,

I need your help for the identification of this Distinctive Unit Insignia USA WW2.

I find this DUI in Italy in Tuscany in an old military camp in the woods near the Gothic Line (Green Line) where the military of the 92^ Infantry Division spent the rest from the battles.

the producer is N.S. Meyer New York

Thanks to all.

Very interesting because I'm certain that this is the crest of the 372nd Infantry Regiment, New Jersey National Guard, which was a "colored" infantry unit. However, the 372nd Infantry Regiment had the following change of stations; December 1941 the Regiment was conducting various guard duty assignments in/around New York City. Long Island and Jersey Ciy; at some point it moved to Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky, arriving 23 April 1944 remained until 8 November 1944, then moved by train to Ft. Huachuca, Arizona, in November 1944, then to Ft. Lawton, Washington, April 24,1945 and finally to Schofield Barracks, 29 April1945, to prepare for the invasion of Japan. The Regiment was inactivated at Ft. Dix, New Jersey on 31 January 1946, at the conclusion of World War II. Research by Dr. Stanton states that the 372nd Infantry Regiment (Colored)(Separate) provided security for Greater New York until April 1944 when it was shipped to Washington and then on to Hawaii 5 September 1945 awaiting deployment for the anticipated invasion of Japan which never came.

We could surmise that members of the 372nd Infantry were used as replacements for units within the 92nd Infantry Division. Maybe that is why the 372nd Infantry DUI was thrown away and subsequently found by you. What do you think?

This is an interesting tidbit of history. Your find has a story of its own. Perhaps someone else out there can add to this. --Ray

Curious for sure, I think this would have to be for another unit, there was no 372nd Maintenance Company in WWII as far as we can see.

The dug up crest is a pre war screwback, meaning this dug up was made some time from the mid-late 1920s through the 1930s to very early 40s And Companies are Non Color Bearing Units and would not have a DI, only Regiments and Battalions had them because they had unit colors.

this is the link, were we can find the same DUI on sale: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/201199819769?...vectorid=229466

A few years ago it was found an identical one in the same area.

They say that they were soldiers aggregates at the 92nd Infantry Division.

Not long ago I found a DUI of the 24^ Infantry Regiment... and they only fought in the Theatre of the Pacific! It's incredible.

Found this on The Institute of Heraldry TIOH.

http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/Catalog/HeraldryMulti.aspx?CategoryId=9045&grp=2&menu=Uniformed%20Services

Says DI was originally for the 2nd Battalion 372nd Infantry, odd, must of been because the 372nd Infantry had Battalions and other elements located in upwards of four differant states in the pre WWII period,New Jersey,Massachusetts, Maryland, Ohio and The District of Columbia (not really a state) indicating that more than one DI was worn by differant elements of the 372nd Infantry???

The 372nd Infantry has a very confusing lineage rife with redesignations and such. But we do know the 2nd Battalion was of the Ohio NG in the period before WWII.

The TIOH states DI, albeit with a curved shield sides rather than the straight shield sides, was autherized for the 372nd Maintenance Company with the description and symbolism revised on 17 September 1992, which is very odd considering that Companies are Non Color Bearing Units, but it would seem that the TIOH still did not want to autherize DIs for Company level units as of 1967, maybe this has changed by the late 80s-early 90s???

So given that this Dug up DI was most likely for the 2nd Battalion 372nd Infantry, it will I believe be of the same catogory of the 24th Infantry DI, owed by a former member of these units who were reassigned to the 92nd Inf Div, brought their old insignia with them for whatever reason (keep sake?) and lost by them there way back in Italy.
