Upton80 Posted October 22, 2014 Share #1 Posted October 22, 2014 I got two knives from my grandfather. First one is dated 1896 has US on other side. The second one says Slater brothers Sheffield, it has what appears to be a beehive on it and I believe a stag handle. I was wondering if someone could tell me about them? I have photos but can't figure out how to post them. Thanks"
bayonetman Posted October 22, 2014 Share #2 Posted October 22, 2014 The first one is almost certainly a Model 1892 Krag bayonet. See: http://www.usmilitaryknives.com/bayo_points_12.htm The other one I have no clue about.
Upton80 Posted October 22, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted October 22, 2014 Thank you I wish I could post a picture as it looks different than I've found. It's shorter and doesn't have the loop on the hand guard.

Upton80 Posted October 23, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted October 23, 2014 Would this be something used in combat? I know he was a Marine and fought in the Pacific.
porterkids Posted October 23, 2014 Share #7 Posted October 23, 2014 This knife you've pictured says Slater Brothers Sheffield on it? You also mentioned a stag handle; this knife has the original Krag wood grips.

bayonetman Posted October 23, 2014 Share #9 Posted October 23, 2014 As far as the shortened Krag bayonet is concerned, it certainly could have been carried and used by a serviceman in WW2. It was quite common for older and obsolete bayonets to be shortened in this manner and converted to a sheath knife. This was not done officially by the military, but was commonly done by individuals and in a few cases by small "surplus" companies seeking a way to sell something they had on hand. thorin6 Posted October 24, 2014 Share #10 Posted October 24, 2014 I found a picture of my three US bayonets made into knives; the one in the middle (a modified Krag bayonet) looks just like the OPs. From other examples I've seen, I think these Krag bayonets were done during WWI, but I can't be sure.
