Found a pair of subdued 1st Infantry Division SSIs at a local flea market last Sunday. Both have been modified by hand painting a crossed arrow and machete over the central "1". Anybody have any ideas as to what the modified patch was used for - some special mission, unit, or what???

The crossed arrow and sword are on the 16th Infantry regiment distinctive unit insignia (DUI).

My guess is this is a local, unauthorized modification for a member of the 16th IR, which is part of the 1st ID.
