mattsmilitary Posted October 20, 2014 Share #1 Posted October 20, 2014 Found these two patches when I was sorting and cleaning for the upcoming show this weekend. The tag above the BSP patch was on the back. Tried out scanning them to and I like how the scans look! Anyway, let me know what you guys think. Thanks a lot, Matt

gwb123 Posted October 21, 2014 Share #7 Posted October 21, 2014 The tag is correct as far as identifying the design. Unfortunately, as noted, both are recently produced.
VarkDriver Posted October 23, 2014 Share #8 Posted October 23, 2014 OK... for the sake of a newbie, how can you tell they are reproductions? Thanks, Robert
gwb123 Posted October 23, 2014 Share #9 Posted October 23, 2014 Look at the weave of the scroll on the RIVDIV 511. This is the same computer generated embroidery stitch that we discussed on an earlier thread. Recognizing the BSP patch for what it is comes from experience. The originals were probably either printed or silk woven. There is a whole series of reproductions made like the one you see here. The embroidery is a bit thick, mostly because this is modern cotton thread rather than a wartime silk base. The details are poorly rendered, the over all shape is off, and the edge is poorly finished. These are all red flags. Plus, if you actually had this in hand, it is probably smaller than the originals. These have been made in Vietnam from about 2005 and as I said there are dozens of them in ARVN and SF designs.
