bayonetman Posted October 20, 2014 Share #2 Posted October 20, 2014 Many knives have loose guards or pommels, mostly from the leather washers in the handle drying out and shrinking. This can be caused by storage in an area with low humidity. Many collectors simply don't worry about it. If it is really important to you, you might try using something like Pecard Antique Leather Dressing with light coats every week over a period of several weeks to allow it to soak into and expand the leather. I like to rub it in with my hand hard enough to warm it and make it penetrate better. Remember that this will likely darken the leather somewhat. Do not use liquids that are designed to soften modern leather such as oils for baseball mitts and shoes.
TALLYHO Posted October 20, 2014 Share #3 Posted October 20, 2014 I`ve already used a hair dryer on the leather after applying the Pecards being careful not to excessively over heat. Not only does it warm up the leather but it liquifies the dressing allowing it to penetrate more readily.
