Yes there are fakes and commecialy prouced knives.

For example people taking a remake ofthe M3 trench knife by Camillius and aging it to appear as a WW2 issue.

Also there is the current kabars with the embossed scabbards. Many have been around since the early 80s or so.With use many look vintage. There are clues to these The font of the USMC marking is diferet. The scabbards being embossed with EGA and USMC is also indicator.

Some sellers are simply ignorant and don't know what they have, so they see something on the internet or elsewhere and assume theirs is the same. I used to email the sellers on eBay and try to explain what they really had, but finally gave up as only about 20% took my information. Most ignored me and a few sent really nasty emails back either telling me to mind my own business or that I didn't know what I was talking about.

I imagine that a fair number of sellers do know the item is not as advertised but are out to make a buck if they can catch someone who doesn't know. Certainly a buyer should do their homework or ask questions before they spend their money. Unfortunately there are so many reproduction / fake / fantasy blades out there that it is easy to be fooled.

Hi, thanks for the link, I am watching an M3 trench knife, for one thing the pic were childishly taken not seriously and didn't show alot. After reading some of this information I could tell it is a repro. I may have to settle for a good repro but I want to know that is what I am buying. Thanks Mike

Mike it really depends on what kind of money you feel you can put towards a knife. With the M3's the fair price can vary a lot. Depends on many different factors condition is probably the first consideration. Specific knife type like blade dated verses blade marked verses guard marked. Also different makers are rarer than others. I spent a long time learning about M3's because I didn't feel comfortable with what I knew and the wide variety of different legitimate knives and the numerous reproductions.

You've come to the right place as there are a lot of members here who have been very helpful to me and are very willing to share their knowledge.

Hi thanks for the information, I took some notes from that reproduction page, I just hope I rember to look at when I am considering another buy. Some times I will concentrate on one thing and miss something important. I guess that is one thing that makes collecting a challenge Mike

I just purchased a "M4 bayonet" and I unfortunately, I didn't do my research on M4 bayonet's before doing the purchase (it came in a group of VN era gear). But, I think what I have is a German M4 (Eickhorn Commercial) with a stainless steel blade. How do I know for sure what I have? There are no markings that I know of other than the "US M4" on the crossguard. The replica M8 scabbord has no markings either.

The best internet resource I've found so far is this:

http://www.usmilitaryknives.com/bayo_points_4.htm

The author, Gary Cunningham identifies the pictured bayonet as a Eickhorn (which mine looks exactly the same, except not as clean).

Since I wrote that article, a dealer told me that he got a stock of these, along with some stainless blade M7 bayonets, from China. Attached is a sale photo from a dealer who advertises that they are Chinese made, which does seem to indicate that these may be Chinese rather than Eickhorn.

^^^^I think that's what I have. Thanks for the reply. I'll still post some pictures up later. Man... it's so confusing with all the M4 variants, reproductions, replicas and fakes....
