One of my oldest friends and mentors in the realm of militaria, Dave McKee (59) passed away on October 10th 2014. He didn't post a whole lot on the forum, but he enjoyed lurking here. Dave's main collecting interest was German pistols, but his absolute favorite items were the pistols with capture papers for them.

When Dave was in high school, he was in a band called the Gimlets. It was started by Dave's close friend Kerry Livgren. For those who may not recognize the name, Kerry ended up starting the band "Kansas" and had Dave decided to keep playing instead of going to work for the Santa Fe railroad, might have made it to stardom.

Dave was about ten years older than me, so he was a great guy to provide me with worldly advice through my high school days. His words of wisdom had a great effect on me. Dave passed after a three year battle with cancer. I'll miss him.

In honor of your friend Allan

I close my eyes

Only for the moment and the moment's gone

All my dreams
Pass before my eyes with curiosity

Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind

Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

(Aa aa aa)
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Oh, ho, ho

Now don't hang on
Nothin' lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy

Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
(All we are is dust in the wind)

Dust in the wind
(Everything is dust in the wind)
Everything is dust in the wind
(In the wind)

Very sad...we never are promised tomorrow. Hopefully he was ready for eternity. May he rest in peace and may God give you and his family comfort.

Thanks to all for your kind words. Robert, a special thanks to you my friend.

I should have mentioned that Dave's other passion collecting wise was military railway items and he had quite a collection. Dave knew he was in bad shape and sold the railroad portion of his collection at the ASMIC convention in Kansas City last year. I know there were at least three DUI's in his collection that were considered to be extremely rare with at least one of those to have been before his discovery, unknown.

Dave had colorectal cancer, which, sadly, is one of those types that is very treatable and beatable if it is caught early. The worst part about Dave's passing, is that he didn't get screened early enough. Lots of people laugh and joke about going in for the ol' "Roto-Rooter" procedure, but a colonoscopy done earlier, could have saved his life. If you're over forty, you should consider being screened.

I'm adding a like to the American Cancer Society webpage if anyone would like more information. Don't let Dave's passing be an unheeded warning. Get checked out if you're of the age! http://www.cancer.org/cancer/colonandrectumcancer/index?gclid=CMmBtc35scECFQaCMgodYT0AgQ
