Hi, I have seen a number of military knives for sale and even cleaned up they still look old, but other look like the blades and guards have been polished. Does polishing a knife ruin the collectors value. Personalty I like a knife to look its age. I look for a knife that has been there. Thanks Mike

I think most collectors will agree that polishing an old knife considerably lowers the value, unless the knife was originally polished bright when it was made, and is still in original condition.

Like you, I actively collect knives that show their honest age. Most of the knives (not bayonets) in my small collection came from veterans or their families. I realize that those that show wear may well have been used post war by the vet, but I have learned to live with that.
