Mitter2k1 Posted October 9, 2014 Share #1 Posted October 9, 2014 Here is another addition to the collection from this past weekend (Thanks Mark). I will apologize in advance for the photos of the photo, I had to take them at an angle to prevent glare from the flash as the yard long is currently being held between 2 pieces of plexiglass. What is great about the photo is how clearly you can see all the details of the uniforms, including the variations on the patches and overseas hats. All of the soldiers are wearing anywhere from 1 to 3 overseas stripes and I don't believe there are any wound stripes in the pic. I still need to do a little research on the unit and see what I can dig up on them. So, here are the pics! Thanks for looking, Mike

Mitter2k1 Posted October 9, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted October 9, 2014 It's a great photo, and like you, I know what you mean about wall space. I'm going to have to encroach on the wife's side of the office. Or maybe the living room Thanks again, Mike
bellasilva Posted October 9, 2014 Share #11 Posted October 9, 2014 Excellent yard-long! I wonder if there's any significance to the last shot - the soldier who has hands on his shoulders.
Mitter2k1 Posted October 9, 2014 Author Share #12 Posted October 9, 2014 Excellent yard-long! I wonder if there's any significance to the last shot - the soldier who has hands on his shoulders. Thank you! I think that guy behind him is a clown and thinks he's being funny. Plus the Captain and Lieutenant are a good 15 to 20 feet away with their backs to him. I imagine they would of had a different posture if the officers were on the other side of the camera. But overall it shows the diversity of the soldiers and is a great photo overall. gomorgan Posted October 9, 2014 Share #15 Posted October 9, 2014 It's a nice Yard Long Mike and the patches are a variation from that usually found or seen as I pointed out Sunday, I'll go through mine before next get together...George
RustyCanteen Posted October 12, 2014 Share #16 Posted October 12, 2014 Great yard long, I will be posting a little history of the 17th this week. But in short, it was a railway engineer regiment that was assigned to port construction. It arrived in France in August 1917. RC

As always, I will be looking forward to reading what you post. If you would like, I can see if I can get some scans of the photo. I have a trick I'm going to try and see if it will work for yard longs on a standard scanner. Thanks, Mike
kfields Posted October 13, 2014 Share #18 Posted October 13, 2014 Mike. That is a very nice yard long. I always check out the yard longs whenever I see them for sale and buy the ones that fit into my collecting. Not sure if this has been done but we should start a yardlong thread. It is a great photo. I was working on another thread which ended up getting a tad larger than I set out to make, but it does have a little information about the 17th. I can tell you that it was recruited from the railroads of Georgia, although it would have enlisted men from surrounding states such as Mississippi, Florida, South Carolina, etc. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/221837-the-yanks-are-coming/ RC
Mitter2k1 Posted October 14, 2014 Author Share #20 Posted October 14, 2014 I finally got the photo scanned and I think it looks pretty good for a homemade method of completing the task. I resized them kind of large so you get a better look at the details. Anyways, I will post them so you guys can comment. Thanks, Mike

RustyCanteen Posted October 14, 2014 Share #25 Posted October 14, 2014 Excellent! Thank you for taking the time to scan them. I think I have an image saved of a 17th Engineers uniform which I will look for, it may have been posted by someone on this forum. Edit - found the pics, they were posted in 2011 by another member in a section which is currently closed for sorting, so I will attach a couple images here.
