Tiger stripes in Korea

I was looking at some photos of 2nd ID soldiers in Korea during the Vietnam era. Apparently tiger stripes were in demand in Korea as well as I found lots of photos which clearly show Tiger boonies being worn. None of these guys had combat patches for Vietnam units or even CIBs, so I don't think they were acquired that way. I guess they were available downtown.

Here are few examples. If anybody has any more, feel free to share them. Thank !!

Very interesting! I guess this just goes to show the locals will always figure out how to make a buck off a GI (and GIs always want to look cool).

I worked with the South Korean Air Force 1970/71. I found a Tiger striped boonie behind an equipment rack in a Korean radio shack, it went in my tool bag and is buried in a box now. Very few Americans got in the Korean radio shacks so I figured a Korean lost it. The guys on the teams I worked with wore fatigue caps or baseball caps.

Tigers were manufactured in Korea for Vietnamese forces.

Indeed. You'd think more of the stuff would have made its way down to the ville and into the hands of GIs. Of course it may well be that it was more common than we think. Nobody pays much attention to the wealth of period photo documentation available on the web.

In the late 1980's, while prowling the shop area outside Angeles City / Clark Air Force base, I still found original tiger stripe boonie hats and shirts hanging in shops there. Not PI patterns, but good Japanese made and Viet made examples.

There were still some floating around in Kinville (outside Camp Hansen on Okinawa) back in '87 while I was there. Not so much hats and shirts, but garment bags and bowling ball bags. One shop even had bolts of tiger cloth - wish I had bought that stuff now.

By the way, that photo of the Capt is very cool.
