Collector5516 Posted September 20, 2014 Share #1 Posted September 20, 2014 Hi all - I just picked this up at a flea market and was wondering if this would have been for a hat or is it a collar insignia? The reverse is marked Vanguard.

sigsaye Posted September 20, 2014 Share #3 Posted September 20, 2014 Pretty sure Those were from the 50s on, and were an unauthorized pinx for the "New" Utility cap.
Collector5516 Posted October 5, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted October 5, 2014 Pretty sure Those were from the 50s on, and were an unauthorized pinx for the "New" Utility cap. Thanks! I did a search on utility cap insignia and didn't find any that were pinback. Does anyone have an example?
Salvage Sailor Posted October 5, 2014 Share #5 Posted October 5, 2014 As usual, Sigsaye is right on the mark. Late 50's early 60's for the utility cap. I've got some pinbacks somewhere around here. From the later 60's on the crows were changed from brass to silver and had clasps rather than pinback.
sigsaye Posted October 5, 2014 Share #6 Posted October 5, 2014 Not sure these were a "Regulation" thing or not. My dad had one when he retired in '67. I do not think he wore it much. He was not big on insignia. I had one some where that is PO3 with crossed flags of the SM with no eagle
Justin B. Posted October 5, 2014 Share #7 Posted October 5, 2014 My dad also had a couple he got for the utility cover in the late '60s. They are both pin back and look like bright brass, one has the eagle and curved chevrons, the other has the EO dozer instead of the eagle, straighter chevrons and is curved along the vertical axis. I wish I'd taken pictures of them, next time I visit I will see if he can dig them out. Justin B.
sigsaye Posted October 6, 2014 Share #8 Posted October 6, 2014 I think they were in service one way or another until the silver clutch backs came out in '
Collector5516 Posted October 6, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted October 6, 2014 Thank you both for the info. Good thing it was only a $3.00 investment
