Thanks for posting this. I knew it existed but lost the link and was looking for it a couple of weeks ago. I am moving it to where the other dog tag info is located.

Have had this chart for years. Thought it may help someone out there tighten up some loose ends?

Enjoy!

This concerns the first two digits of all U.S. Army service numbers (for enlisted men) of the W.W.II era. The first two digits tell you something about each man:

4 = draftee (?)

7 = ?

The second digit:

3 = Pennsylvania, Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia

4 = Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida

5 = Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky

6 = Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan

7 = Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota

8 = Arkansas, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana

For all of you interested in collecting dog tags, Paul Braddock wrote the reference bible on these things. I got a message from him this week and he says he is down to the last 6 copies. If you collect dog tags, you need this book. You can email Paul at [email protected] - it is 167 pages of insight. I bought my own copy from him within the last month and now I wonder why I waited so long.
