QED4 Posted September 3, 2014 Share #1 Posted September 3, 2014 I don't have an Ontario Aircrew Survival and Egress Knife so obviously I need one but the problem is Ontario sells a commercial version. I have no idea if there is a difference between it an the military issue one and if so what it is. I looked at one the other day at a flea market, it was priced well below what Amazon sells the commercial ones for but still not cheap. The question is , is there a difference and what is it? The one I looked at was exactly like the issue one but the markings had me worried, it was marked Ontario Pat. Pend. on one side of the handle and ASEK on the other I could find no US or anything else for that matter anywhere. Also I have seen both solid foliage green and cammo scabbards were both issued? I want to make sure I get an issue one and not a commercial one if there is a difference so any help would be appreciated.
bayonetman Posted September 3, 2014 Share #2 Posted September 3, 2014 (Please excuse any typing or terminology errors. My grandfather, Bayonetman, has had some health problems and although he is home now he is still more or less in bed so I am reading the posts to him and trying to type out his comments!) This will be an issue that complicates collecting in the future. Many items now are purchased on an "off the shelf" type contract in which the maker not only supplies the item on contract, but makes an identical commercial version. To my understanding there will normally be no way to tell a military issued item from the commercial sales one. Ontario tells me that is the case with the ASEK. My ASEK came from an airman who was issued it, but even some military personnel purchase the commercial item if they are not entitled to one by issue due to their specialty. So even if you get one from a service member it might not have been government purchase.
Rolf Posted September 4, 2014 Share #3 Posted September 4, 2014 Our prayers go out to Bayonetman for a full and speedy recovery and you are a mighty fine grandson to help him with this. Sorry ... assuming that you are the grandson and not the granddaughter!
