Iron man ship medals

I bought this set several years ago and occasionally see them show up in groups on ebay the last one named to the Salt Lake City Like mine. Both of these are inscribed USS SALT LAKE CITY IRON MAN SHIP SCOUTING FORCE 1934-1935 the silver one is marked Sterling.

I suspect they were from some type of manuver/competition.

Let me know if you have seen anything in print or if you have seen them named to other ships
