I have couple of SF jungle jackets with removed USARV SSI but Airborne tab left. And others with the the combination of Airborne tab and USARV SSI which was the Special Mission Advisory Group.

Do you know when the SF assigned to SMAG received orders to remove the USARV SSI ?

Medical Corps officer assigned to SMAG. His previous assignment was the 1st Aviation Brigade. The brigade SSI has been removed from this jacket to be used on his third assignment uniform as a combat patch. Third assignment was FANK.

Very cool.

USARV shut down in May of '72; according to RADIX, SMAG (later Special Mission Advisory Detachment) left USARV and came under MACV control on 4/1/72.

So if they were told to remove the USARV SSI, I'd say it was done in April or May of '72.

Nice jackets Owen.

Longhorn, thanks for the infos. And when did the SMAD leave the country, with the last US troops in Feb. 73 ?

That's tough to find. Since the RVN's STD shut down in Feb/March '73, I'd say a little before that but I'm not positive.

Great jackets Steve. I really like the look of direct embroidered insignia. What are the three foreign jump wings on the bottom jacket?
