Chaplain William E. Patrick

23rd Infantry, 2nd Division

For extraordinary heroism in action while serving with the 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, A.E.F., during operations on the Meuse River, France, November 1--11, 1918. during this period Chaplain Patrick constantly exposed himself to enemy fire, while giving first aid to the wounded and assisting in their evacuation. Home: Boston, Mass.

The caption on the back is written in period ink, and says that he served with the 23rd Infantry until March 17, 1919; then transferred to the 5th MG Battalion.

My favorite!

This photo, with some others, came with the Lewis image, and helped me ID Lewis in the portrait above. Conversations with a fellow collector helped ID the captain in the front row as Captain John W. Cotton, who also earned a DSC. Sgt. Lewis can be seen in the back row, wearing his medal.

Capt. Cotton's citation reads....

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) John W. Cotton, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 2d Machine-Gun Battalion, 1st Division, A.E.F., near Soissons, France, 20 July 1918. When the advancing infantry line had been held up by heavy artillery and machine-gun fire and all the officers had become casualties, Captain Cotton sent what remained of his machine-gun company to protect the flanks and then voluntarily reorganized the assaulting line, breaking up a hostile counterattack which had been launched from the hill in front of them. Twice during the action he personally led tanks forward in advance of the line and reduced hostile machine-gun nests. As he was leading the attacking waves forward in the face of heavy fire he was seriously wounded in the head by a machine-gun bullet, but he pushed on until he was forced to stop by loss of blood.

Wow...just found this thread, and it sure is worth bumping back up to the top of the conversation! Some amazing images--take it from a guy who has collected US WWI images for 25+ years. These DSC images are near impossible to find! Great collection, Mike. Congrats on fine "collecting with a focus."
