stucky151 Posted July 25, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 25, 2014 Just won this original press release photo of Gy Janson. This was the picture released for him being a pall bearer for one of the unknown soldiers to be buried at Arlington. Very excited to get this cool piece. 03gyrene Posted July 25, 2014 Share #7 Posted July 25, 2014 From what I recall of my Marine Corps history, GySgt. Janson received both the Army and Navy versions of the CMH. He was one of five Marines who did so before the practice of issuing more than one CMH was abandoned. He served under the name Charles Hoffman during WWI. Eric Queen Posted July 25, 2014 Share #8 Posted July 25, 2014 Outstanding. Can you imagine having the "original" of that photo.
Old Marine Posted July 25, 2014 Share #9 Posted July 25, 2014 Dumb question time; is there any more information on this Marines service? How did he get Italian and Montenegrin medals? When were the Marines fighting in Italy or the Balkans? I thought only the Army sent regiments to Italy. You learn something new everyday on this forum. By the way, that is a great photo, congrats on snagging it. Dennis

Allan H. Posted July 25, 2014 Share #11 Posted July 25, 2014 Does anyone know why Janson served in WWI under the name "Charles F. Hoffman?" I haven't been able to find the story. Great photo! Allan
stucky151 Posted July 25, 2014 Author Share #12 Posted July 25, 2014 I always wondered how one would serve under a different name. Im sure it is quite interesting when diving into those stories. Here are some of the pictures from Nov 11th 1921.

SgtMaddoxUSMC Posted March 22, 2017 Share #16 Posted March 22, 2017 Yeah, not sure why he didnt wear his Navy MOH. Hey Gunny, this could be completely off but by reading the description on the reverse of the photo, it almost sounds like the Army MoH was held in higher esteem than the Navy version? "He holds the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest American award for bravery;" then almost like an afterthought: "..the Navy Medal of Honor".... Was there any seniority between the different MoH's?
cw1979 Posted August 27, 2017 Share #17 Posted August 27, 2017 Does anyone know why Janson served in WWI under the name "Charles F. Hoffman?" I haven't been able to find the story. Great photo! Allan Just a guess on my part but he may have been concerned about having a Germanic sounding name during the war. My only other thought is he may have been concerned about reprisals against relatives living in Germany. Just my 2 cents
12A54 Posted August 27, 2017 Share #18 Posted August 27, 2017 Just a guess on my part but he may have been concerned about having a Germanic sounding name during the war. My only other thought is he may have been concerned about reprisals against relatives living in Germany. Just my 2 cents Well, Hoffman is a German name and Janson is Scandanavian, so it's unlikely that was the reason.
