While usually pretty sure about engraving being official or unofficial. This I feel it is original but still have an unsure feeling so I thought I would ask. I really was not worried about it as I bought everything right just wanted to make sure.

thanks,

Brandyn

Know close up of engraving. I am leaning the it is official because of the fact all capital, first letter larger but that does not mean it is official either.

thanks

I think the DI is for the 76th Field Artillery.

The engraving on the PH looks correct to me as well.

Does everybody agree they are the 2nd lts from Indiana. Just trying to get a consensus. That way what ever I do with it I feel confident in what I say.

thanks for all the help

I would see if there are any award cards for him at St Louis; that may confirm/ deny the DFC/ Air Medal for you.

  • 5 years later...

I am the new caretaker of this group and have begun to research it further. According to a 1949 article in a local paper, White was awarded the DFC, Air Medal and Purple Heart. Also, he was originally commissioned into the Field Artillery which would explain the 76th FA DUI.

Kyle,

I did find the award card for his Air Medal, no luck on his DFC however.

In "Grottaglie, and home" a history of the 449th bomb group forty-seventh wing, White's pilot wrote the following account of the mission in which White was killed.
