Came today - beautiful named Ike to a ball turret gunner in the CBI theater ...just the way I like them!

Sterling gunners wings. The ribbon bars have a plastic coating of some type but have that been there done that look and feel.

The patches are amazing! I just have to do my research and find the missing ribbon that should be there and what the small ribbon is...I think its Chinese self-awarded...?

Here the pics!

Gorgeous uniform. I'll bet the missing ribbon is a Good Conduct ribbon. The coating on the ribbons is wax. They were made that way to not stain so easily. It is interesting to see the British Burma Star ribbon below the US awards.

Where is it normally placed? I kind of want to remove it but I know thats where it was left so I should probably leave it, but it hides the wings...

I've ordered his records so hopefully we will find out that missing ribbon!

Thanks for all the kind comments guys!

Not sure that I am following you... The missing spot on the ribbon rack only makes sense for a Good Conduct ribbon. After all, the guy was a staff sergeant and I would expect to see a good cookie on the rack. The Burma Star is a British award and probably not authorized, but I've seen them worn on CBI uniforms before. Apparently, soldiers looked at the CBI as the forgotten theater, so having a separate campaign ribbon for China, Burma and India was desired.

Now for the wing- if you aren't happy with the location for display, you could always move it up just a little bit so that it shows through at the notch where the collar and lapel meet.

No I wasn't disagreeing with the good conduct ribbon. I was saying I kind of want to remove that Burma ribbon but I probably won't because I know it was put there by the vet! If he did 35 missions would that automaticly give him a DFC???

No military award is automatic. I have seen any number of oddities in regards to awards of medals. 35 missions sounds like a lot, and one might assume that it was enough for a DFC, but unless he was recommended and approved, he wouldn't automatically be entitled to one. Of course getting the records would be the way to go. One thing about service in the Pacific, it is common to see an award of the Air Medal followed by an award of the DFC rather than an award of an oak leaf cluster.

You could always cheat the ribbons down if that is what you prefer, but the fact that they have been pinned to the uniform for such a long time, I would tell you that I wouldn't move it if it were my uniform, but it isn't mine so do what you feel is right to honor the man who wore it.

Thanks for all the kind words guys!

And Allan thanks for the great info and suggestions!

I should have his awards today so we will know for sure!

And I am with you...if thats the way the vet left it, then I think thats how it should stay.

Thanks again,

Daniel

Also, after doing some more reading, there are several letters to the national headquarters where he is requesting a certain medal. I cant quite read all the hand writing so I dont know which one he is so upset over not getting, its actually pretty neat to see these older letters. Just wish I could figure out which one he thinks he is being shorted!

But now I just to find a "wax" covered Good Conduct ribbon.....anyone!?!?!?!

Hi Dan,

Very nice coat, and the research is great, you are lucky his file was more intact than most.

Nice!! I like the theatre made bullion 10th patch, I had a bombardier grouping awhile back from the 10th and he had that same patch on his uniform. Congrats

Upon further review...I see that he could also have the EAME ribbon, but it appears on his rack he has the American Defense (the yellow one). I am still leaning towards the GC as the "missing" one...but I wonder why he would choose to wear the American Defense over the Europe theater one?
