I've noticed that we have had more and more members on the forum who are from all around the world. Since English is one of the hardest languages to speak and write, I have seen some of our international members struggle to make their point because their English skills are not refined. This website does an adequate job of translating most of the major languages into English or from English into another language. This may be of great help to many of you doing international business as well. This site is very easy to use and is completely free. On a related note, your post reminded me of humorous "unfortunate" translations done by professional marketing department types for their companies. Here are a few listed on another website:

 

 

13. When Parker Pen marketed a ball-point pen in Mexico, its ads were supposed to have read, "It won't leak in your pocket and embarrass you." The company thought that the word "embarazar" (to impregnate) meant to embarrass, so the ad read: "It won't leak in your pocket and make you pregnant."

 

12. Scandinavian vacuum manufacturer Electrolux used the following in an American campaign: "Nothing Sucks like an Electrolux."

 

11. Clairol introduced the "Mist Stick," a curling iron, into Germany only to find out that "mist" is slang for manure. Not too many people had use for the "Manure Stick."

We DO NOT talk like that.

It comes close but Dutch is one of the hardest languages to learn (I have been told).

I was waiting for the first International guy to tell me that something translated badly. Like I said, it gives an adequate translation but, it's far from perfect. I had my Spanish friend look over the Spanish translation, he just smirked and said: "That's close enough", he would not elaborate.

 

A few other points when using the translator. Do not shorten words or use abbreviations. Examples:

 

1) "Do Not" should be used instead of "Don't"

 

2) "Will Not" should be used instead of "Won't"

 

3) Here's a tough one... "Lieutenant" should be used instead of "Lt."

 

4) And above all... use your spell check before trying to translate. "Snixerforf" will not translate into any language!

In general, part of it would sound like this in English: "Me going to magazine to buy gazette.".

As you said, it does come close enough to give an idea what one is talking about.

All of the humor aside, I think I understand right where you are coming from; a very nice gesture of inclusion toward our friends from overseas.

 

I am pleased and proud that people from around the world are interested in US militaria, and am always especially glad to see our international friends on this and other forums. As Americans we tend to assume that the rest of the world speaks English, or at the very least can understand it (perhaps even better when we speak in a very loud, slow, and annoying manner). No doubt your gesture of friendship is very much appreciated.

Seeing squares or no squares depends on the software you have installed on your pc.

 

If you have installed the chinese and or japanese (or other asian langauges) figures (langaugepackages) then you will see the real signs (letters).

If you did not install the correct langaugepackages (software) then you will only see squares.

If there's a word they don't have, you can ask in the forum for a close translation. If you're looking for obscure military terms and other specialized terminology, that site has a pretty good amount of them.
