Is this an original Naval Special Warfare Group Vietnam patch?

Does anyone know if this is a copy of the SVN war era Naval Special Warfare Group Vietnam patch? It is slightly different from one in my collection. I read on the forum somewhere that the pebbly looking material you see on the back of this patch indicates that it was made in Taiwan. Another thing I read somewhere on this forum is that the South Vietnamese were very skimpy on thread so you never find a lot of excess threads on the reverse side of their patches unlike this patch compared to an original I have. I was wondering what everyone else thought?

Theatre made pieces were made with the materials that were available,so cloth used may vary.As for "the South Vietnamese were very skimpy on thread so you never find a lot of excess threads on the reverse side of their patches",this holds true in a general sense, but it is not always the case.

If you compare the two that you have posted, the one that you feel is original has roughly the same amount of "backthreading" as the other one in post #1.

As for the patch in post # 1.I like it and would have it in my collection.Just my opinion.

Was there a third variant or is this a copy (see below)?

Dennis- This is a copy.

These are known as the Monterey or Northern California versions that were made in the late 80's - early 90's.

They look great on the front but the tell tale is the back with the "dots" and you can also see through the background material.

A lot of people got burned with these back in the day, myself included.

Bob,

Many thanks for this information as I had a feeling it was a copy.
