Michigan Dawg Posted June 16, 2014 Share #1 Posted June 16, 2014 Are there any modelers/collectors who could help me with a few dimensions of the helmet liner in the M1917 helmet as I want to make an accurate (as possible) version for my 1/6-scale American Doughboy figure. I'm looking for (1) the height of the leather outer band of the helmet liner (2) the height of the black oilcloth liner (3) the dimensions of the paper/cloth net adjustment instruction label fastened to the inside top of the dome Any measurements can be approximately close and that will be fine for my purposes as I'm just trying to simulate the construction details. Thanks for any help you can supply.
aef1917 Posted June 16, 2014 Share #2 Posted June 16, 2014 The original blueprints show the tube retainer as 1.5" tall, the oilcloth sweatband as 3.75" tall and the instruction tag as 1.5" tall by 2" wide.
Michigan Dawg Posted June 16, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted June 16, 2014 Thanks very much aef1917! I actually guessed pretty darn close on the leather band just by scaling it from a photo. The oilcloth I would have never gotten quite right because of the way it's always tucked, twisted, rumpled, and crumpled in all the photos I've looked at. At any rate, thanks ever so much for the dimensions and I appreciate your help.
aef1917 Posted June 16, 2014 Share #4 Posted June 16, 2014 It probably would have been more helpful if I had noted earlier that it's not a straight strip of oilcloth. It's actually a semi-circle. I'll try to get a scan up later tonight.
Michigan Dawg Posted June 16, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted June 16, 2014 I actually considered whether that might be the case and was thinking about doing something like that in scale just to make sure that my miniature liner looked the part. I would never have known, though, that was really the case unless you had mentioned it so thanks for that important piece of information. I've been thinking about how to simulate both the netting and the oilcloth and have come up with a pretty good scheme (I think) so I'll be anxious to get your thoughts on its scale appearance when I have some photos to share. Thanks again for your help.

Robswashashore Posted June 17, 2014 Share #8 Posted June 17, 2014 Wow, all that detail in 1/6 will be fine! Can you post a photo when you are done?
Michigan Dawg Posted July 3, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted July 3, 2014 Robswashashore, I will absolutely post pictures when I complete them (I decided to work on two helmets at the same time as I have another idea for a doughboy when I finish my Buck Jones project. Sabrejet, thanks for that link as it was most instructive. I'm on a camping trip at present but when I get back I'll post a picture of my progress to date. Thanks and a Happy 4th to all. Robswashashore Posted July 30, 2014 Share #10 Posted July 30, 2014 Dawg -- when I was bashing my 1/6 figures together I used to wish I could shrink myself down to Barbie size to handle all the little details...
