kanemono Posted June 5, 2015 Share #30 Posted June 5, 2015 S/Sgt Bernard E. Kirkendall, Chief Radio Operator, Headquarter Company , 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division was killed in action on June 6, 1944 while landing at Omaha Beach on the early morning of D-Day. The Headquarters Company came in on three boats at H plus 40, received one burst of shell-fire to one boat (killing one man) during the approach, but other-wise met nothing but sporadic automatic weapons fire. The Germans held their fire until the men were ready to jump from the boat. When the ramp went down the men dropped down into water averaging 41/2 – 5 feet deep, bullets began to fly around them. Kirkendall was immediately killed with most of the Headquarters Company officers and non-coms. Please click on picture for larger image. blitzkrieg gsd Posted June 5, 2015 Share #31 Posted June 5, 2015 All great groups guys to the heros of are country thank you for preserving these items so they will not be forgotten. In my eyes D Day was the turning point in the war. Without these men there's no telling how this war would have turned out. Please everyone with a group to a member of the invasion show us what you have.
David D Posted June 5, 2015 Share #32 Posted June 5, 2015 Not as amazing as these groupings, but here is s photo of Sgt. Topolski if C/116. He landed on D-Day with the 29th
bellasilva Posted June 5, 2015 Share #33 Posted June 5, 2015 Can't believe I missed this thread, these are some of the best groupings I've ever seen. I'll add my most recent, modest, and only D-Day item. Virgil Bogenreif served as a Tec 5 with the 3820th Quartermaster Gas Supply Company and landed at the Easy Red sector of Omaha Beach on June 6-7th in support of the 29th Infantry Division. A 3820th veteran's account of their landing detailed the carnage on the beach and the intense German shelling. He survived the invasion and went on to serve throughout Normandy, the Rhineland, and Northern France. These are his dog tags (I don't have them in hand yet as I just won them on auction). Also pictured is an image of some of the men of the 3820th landing on Omaha.
aussie digger Posted June 6, 2015 Share #34 Posted June 6, 2015 Some amazing groups on here! Here is my small contribution. A group belonging to a brave soldier that jumped on both operation Neptune (D-Day) and operation Varsity with easy company 507th PIR, crazy to think those dog tags were probably there through it all! USdog Posted June 6, 2015 Share #38 Posted June 6, 2015 Here are some of my D-Day items. They have been posted before but wanted to contribute my small portion to pay tribute to these veterans for this coming anniversary. Hope you guys don't mind.... First group belonged to a veteran that was in G/3/508 and made the jump on D-Day. Went through all of their campaigns unscathed, but was later killed in action in the Korean War. Second is a group belonging to a member of HQ/2/506 who also made the jump on D-Day and was WIA in Normandy and the Bulge.

Justin Posted June 6, 2015 Share #41 Posted June 6, 2015 Great groups, the invasion of Normandy has really spiked my interest lately. I've been reading just about anything I could find on the invasion and watching lots of archive footage. Really great groupings, I would love to collect Normandy groupings one day. Great stuff thanks for sharing. J
