Greg Robinson Posted June 2, 2008 Share #2 Posted June 2, 2008 One of the first US bayonets I bought when I got serious about collecting such things was a "cutdown" M1. In my case it was a pre WW2 arsenal made M1905 that was cutdown but basically the same thing. This was in the mid 1990's and I also paid $125 for it. . Condition was near mint. Back then you didn't have the internet and bayonets were harder to find. Then, for a while. those were all over the place cheap. I once bought a "bowie point" cutdown w/o scabbard for $50 and it was unissued. This was about five or six years ago. But the market has changed and while they're still easier to find than 10-15 years ago the prices are now back where they used to be. So to make a long story short....you did OK. But I don't see the M1 being a prime investment piece anytime in the near future. Too many of them were made. But if you're like me and you bought it because you like them.....then not a problem
JohnnieDavis Posted June 2, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted June 2, 2008 Yes, definitely because I like them, not just collector value. I collect military firearms because they are fascinating, as well as a good investment. Was also looking at a nice K98 bayonet with scabbard, but passed. anyone have a matching one up for sale? I like it. Adam I think you did well Adam. I didn't know about the show; I'm in Boston and would have tried to make time to go I prefer the 16" Model of 1905 bayonets myself but yours seems like quite a nice example, especially for the money...I paid 160 for a 16" model of 1905 in good shape, and then another 170 for a mint original scabbard recently. Only reason I bought was I had the opportunity, and suddenly it became clear that I would be wishing for prices like that in a few years! "Remember when a nice Model of 1905 was only 200 bucks??" "Yeah, those were the days!" The M1 looks pretty good, too, by the way!
