Hey guys, just put together a display of all 8 manufacturers. All have type 1 pommel plates (raised dommed pins and Standard Products intertwined SP).

Stuck a M3 above for some reason??? I thought it would look good. Any thoughts? Ideas to improve it????

Thanks hawkdriver.... I was thinking it might be better without the scabbards.... Its a shame to hide the blades....

I like it, but I would call it "The M4 Bayonet for the M1 Carbine" and take the M3 knife out. In its place, display one of the M4's outside the scabbard just like you did the M3 knife. Display the M3 by itself, or with some other WWII knives.

Gunbarrel, your right about the title, it would be better to title it M4 Bayonets for the M1 Carbine and I will change it. If you were able to read the labels it refers to the origins of the M4 and thus the M3 is there. I had a parade plated M4 up there at first. It looked out of place. I do have another VG+ KI that I will put up there and see how that looks. This site is great. and I appreciate the input. You spend so much time making a display sometimes you can't see the forest thru the trees.

Oh yeah, and I must make a correction... The Utica's pommel plate is not Standard Products. It has the domed pins but no maker marks.

Chris,

I would then leave the M3 knife there. It makes sense. By the way, I failed to mention that I really like the way you are displaying them. Good job! thumbsup.gif

That is a very nice display.

I have attached some pics of a few of the displays at Smokey Mountain Knife Works with the thought you might pick up some ideas from them.

This is a special display and part of it includes all the steps in manufacturing a M3 / M4 knife / bayonet. Notice the M1 at top to give an idea of size.

Old Marine

That is a great looking, eye catching display, but I have to agree with Gunbarrel, take out the M3 and keep it all about the M4.

Wether you keep it as it is or you change it, it's still a nice display.

Thanks for posting it.

I would like to thank all of you for your impressions, suggestions, pictures. I am going to display my collection of Mark 2 Kabars the same way then.

I can't stand this stuff in the closet anymore! One problem..... Wife doesn't like me to use up anymore wall space. Something will have to go.

I'm thinking her..................I'll get back to you on that one...........

bayonetman

I like the M3 where it is for two reasons:

1. The M3 is the direct ancestor of the M4 - the "father" so to speak.

2. The M4 was issued as a replacement for the M3, and actually saw most of its WW2 service as a knife, not a bayonet.

However, I do like the idea of displaying them without the scabbards, since the scabbard is essentially the same no matter what maker, etc. Agreed, the blades all look pretty much alike also but there are usually slight differences.

I do not store/display my bayonets in scabbards for two reasons. First, with the M8A1 and others the retaining springs will scratch the blade, and second, rust can possibly start without being detected.
