WWII USN Gunner's mate 2nd class

I picked up this nice WWII gunner's mate 2nd class jumper from a forum member and I was able to ID it using the muster rolls on Ancestry. This sailor was on the battleship USS Washington and the cruiser USS Pittsburgh. It struck me as kind of odd that both these ships had incidents that resulted in severe damage to their bows. The USS Washington collided with USS Indiana in February of 1944 and suffered severe damage to her bow. The USS Pittsburgh lost her bow in a typhoon in June of 1945. This sailor was on board these ships during the periods of time when each of these events occurred.

This is also my first jumper, out of the 150 or so that I own, from a sailor who was on a Battleship.

For what it's worth, the Jumper came from Cincinatti Ohio

That jives with my research. Now I know I have the right guy for sure.

:D The bulk of my collection is Amphib jumpers, with a healthy population of Seabee jumpers, and pharmacist mates.

I mostly concentrate on Iwo Jumpers, I only have a very few jumpers that are not Iwo related, one set is my USMC Forest Green and Navy jumper belonging to vets who both served on the USS Iowa during WWII. Ironically The Iowa would have been at Iwo if it wasn't for the accident.

I do love all the types of Navy jumpers but Battleship IDed jumpers have that extra punch unlike the others.

Jay -- a few really nice additions to the collection! Any idea if this sailor was on the Washington when she sank the Kirishima at Guadalcanal?

Garandomatic

I have a fire controlman from the Pittsburgh, one of my best scores at aboput $3.99 plus shipping, and the man was almost definitely named for Babe Ruth, which is kind of neat. They called the bow the USS McKeesport, as it is a suburb of Pittsburgh. Another of his jumpers sold almost a year later.

I am pretty sure he was. They don't have every month's roll for every year but it looks like he was on the Washington from March of 1941 until Dec of 1944.

I picked up another Iwo jumper from a sailor on an LSM earlier this week. I was also able to find a photo of the LSM in action on the beach at Iwo. When the uniform arrives I will post pics.

Oh man you're killing me, I just haven't been finding anything lately!

In a couple months, you'll probably come across a half dozen Iwo jumpers and alphas... you know how this hobby ebbs and flows. Long dry spells and then all of a sudden there's more than you know what to do with!

And Jay, that's pretty neat that he was on the ship for so long. Must've witnessed some major history from his spot by the guns.

Jguy,

Yes, it's been a slump for the last few months. The few I picked up didn't pan out like I had hoped, but I did finally pick up a 1st and 2nd MarDiv uniforms to complete my Marine Division uniform set.

But as for Iwo items I hope I can find some items at Bob's show next month!
