tball101 Posted April 10, 2014 Share #1 Posted April 10, 2014 Found this grouping locally earlier this week. He was a glider pilot with the 319th troop carrier squadron of the 1st air commando group. I'm still waiting for the family to contact me with any photos or paperwork they come across.

24th_infantry Posted April 10, 2014 Share #8 Posted April 10, 2014 Wow that is an impressive grouping! Definitely in good hands. I love the M42. A buddy of mine was a glider pilot in ETO. He went into combat wearing the M42. He had to trade his A2 to a paratrooper to get a jump uniform.
24th_infantry Posted April 10, 2014 Share #9 Posted April 10, 2014 Just crossed my mind, weren't glider pilots all given flight offer ranks? If so why Lt. rank on the jump jacket? I may be completely wrong on this but my buddy wore only FO rank.
Allan H. Posted April 10, 2014 Share #10 Posted April 10, 2014 Glider pilots could be any number of ranks. The earliest GP's were staff sergeants, though they were promoted later. You will find LT's, CPT's and maybe even a Major or two. I once stated that there were approximately to Flight Officers for each commissioned officer in the GP's but was shown that the number was more like 8 FOs for each commissioned GP.
