skypilot6670 Posted February 17, 2014 Share #2 Posted February 17, 2014 Very nice and I suspect quite rare. The flight school pinned thread has one and some period photos.Congrats Costa.Nice Job. Mike
pfrost Posted February 17, 2014 Share #3 Posted February 17, 2014 There are at least 4 variations on this cap badge. Cal-Aero, Polaris, Mira Loma, and a generic one (without the name on the bottom scroll). Located in Southern California, Cal-Aero was one of the larger contract flight school training pilots for the USAAF. Russ is an expert on this school, and I am sure he will add more to the thread soon. The center prop also differes for the different schools. Polaris has a three bladded prop and Cal-Aeor has no prop.
LuftStalg1 Posted February 17, 2014 Share #4 Posted February 17, 2014 Wow, great find! I think the "V" was for "Victory" field.
pfrost Posted February 17, 2014 Share #5 Posted February 17, 2014 Here is a photo of the TV star, Bob Cummings wearing his Cal-Aero cap badge. Mr Cummings was an instructor at Cal-Aero during WWII.
pfrost Posted February 17, 2014 Share #6 Posted February 17, 2014 Russ can corect me if I am wrong (and I usually am), but I believe Cal-Aero was located in Ontario, Mira Loma in Oxnard, and Polaris at War Eagle Field in Lancaster, CA. While there were a number of "Victory Flields" the best known one in Texas wore a different badge.
COOKIEMAN Posted February 17, 2014 Share #7 Posted February 17, 2014 Definitely Mira Loma Flight Academy at Oxnard, California. The "V" design represents Victory, no Victory Field involved. The aircraft logo with, or without a prop, was used on many things; signs, buildings, documents, etc. Examples follow.

Costa Posted February 22, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted February 22, 2014 guys--- last week i received a visor cap myra loma badge which i posted. the seller also had the instructors visor which he set for free. sadly, it was in an attic --- he states--- and is in a sorry state. out of shape with mothing but, complete. best thing about it is the instructors name, address and asn are in the dome. still more--- you can see where the origonal location of the badge was due to the pin holes. i put it on a foam head to help shape it and even that didnt work well for i had to trim the foam down to fit the visor. LuftStalg1 Posted February 22, 2014 Share #13 Posted February 22, 2014 Oh, you gotta put it back on the hat Costa! You can't leave them naked without each other like that. That's just wrong.
rustywings Posted February 22, 2014 Share #14 Posted February 22, 2014 Nice pick-up! What type of buttons are on the sides of the visor? The Rules Of Heraldry would dictate that a Civilian Contract Flight Instructor was not authorized to wear side-buttons with the U.S. Army eagle design. They were suppose to be unmarked gilt buttons. But I've seen several Flight Instructor caps where that regulation was not apparently enforced. Just curious...
skypilot6670 Posted February 22, 2014 Share #15 Posted February 22, 2014 The icing on the cake. That is really nice.I know nothing about hat patterns,my guess is its very rare, congrats on a great find. Fraternally Mike
bobgee Posted February 23, 2014 Share #16 Posted February 23, 2014 Nice find! I've seen worse visors than this restored. As it's summer gabardine try working it over with a hair dryer to remove the wrinkles. With them gone you'll be good to go! Good Luck........Bobgee
bschwartz Posted February 23, 2014 Share #17 Posted February 23, 2014 That's a great bonus! I can't say I've ever gotten that lucky to receive a cap along with a badge. Great catch all around. You did well. P.S. Put the damn badge on the hat already, what are you waiting for?
rathbonemuseum.com Posted February 24, 2014 Share #18 Posted February 24, 2014 I would put the badge back on. I personally like salty items like this. Prove they were used well.
Costa Posted March 3, 2014 Author Share #19 Posted March 3, 2014 after receiving the badge with the added surprise of the hat, i decided to join the 2 together again. the seller seperated the badge from the hat due to its condition which was a bit beat from years in an attic. the pin to the badge went right back into the holes previously mounted and you can see the indentations of the top of the wings on the material of the hat. a perfect line up. best to be together then seperated.
